Bookish News Round-Up Late January 2020

I love collecting bookish news and articles that I find interesting to share with you all when they’ve accumulated. Here’s today’s Bookish News Round-Up!

George R. R. Martin has CONFIRMED he is finishing his A Song of Ice and Fire series! I love that he said "people know an ending—but not the ending" from the TV show. I’m a huge fan of the series, but I’m trying not to get my hopes up too much. Anything can happen when a series is overtaken by a hit HBO show and hasn’t seen a new installment in nearly a decade. This list of books set in the Midwest made me want to bolt to the bookstore. For someone who loves Chicago, Northern Wisconsin fish boils, and the Great Plains, I’ve read relatively few books that take place in the Midwest. All 12 books on this list are unfamiliar to me, though I’m particularly interested in picking up A Thousand Acres by Jane Smiley. (I’m a sucker for re-imagined Shakespeare, especially King Lear!)

Buzzfeed has shared “28 Little Free Libraries That Are So Adorable It Hurts.” They couldn’t have picked a better title for the article. “Little free libraries” have popped up around the world, where passersby can take or leave a book at their leisure. I would love to have one when I (hopefully!) have my own house one day.

I’m hard-pressed to think of anything that will more beautifully combine my law school life and bookworm tendencies than the newly released Fight of the Century: Writers Reflect on 100 Years of Landmark ACLU Cases. This article explains the impetus for the book, which was the brain-child of federal-public-defender-turned-author Ayelet Waldman and her husband, Michael Chabon. I’m very excited to get my hands on this treasure!

This wonderful Chicago Trib article asks a diversity of authors: what book do you turn to in uncertain times? I loved the shout-outs to some of my personal favorites like Jane Austen’s timeless Pride & Prejudice and Marjane Satrapi’s Persepolis, which is the best graphic novel ever, in my humble opinion. My go-to when times are tough is the namesake of this blog, The Little Prince. I’d love to know what books you turn to for comfort!
